The Role of Uncertainty in the Economics of Catastrophic Climate Change
نویسنده
چکیده
Using climate change as a prototype motivating example, this paper analyzes the implications of structural uncertainty for the economics of catastrophes. The paper shows that having an uncertain multiplicative parameter, which ampli es or scales exogenous impulses and is updated by Bayesian learning, induces a critical tail fatteningof posterior-predictive distributions. Such fattened tails have strong implications for situations (like climate change) where a catastrophe is theoretically possible because prior knowledge cannot place su¢ ciently narrow bounds on overall damages. Under strict relative risk aversion, the impact of an uncertain scale of damages on cost-bene t analysis outweighs the impact of discounting.

A Review of the Effects of Climate Change with an Emphasis on Burden of Waterborne Diseases
Background and Purpose: Climate change has major impact on water cycle, resulting in effects on water resources, the frequency and severity of droughts, floods due to severe rainfall, natural environments, society, and economics and human health. In this paper, surveys on different models of climate change as well as the effects of climate change on the burden of waterborne diseases and also, ...
متن کاملFat-Tailed Uncertainty in the Economics of Catastrophic Climate Change
I believe that the most striking feature of the economics of climate change is that its extreme downside is nonnegligible. Deep structural uncertainty about the unknown unknowns of what might go very wrong is coupled with essentially unlimited downside liability on possible planetary damages. This is a recipe for producing what are called ‘‘fat tails’’ in the extremes of critical probability di...
متن کاملGHG Targets as Insurance Against Catastrophic Climate Damages
A critical issue in climate-change economics is the speci cation of the so-called damages functionand its interaction with the unknown uncertainty of catastrophic outcomes. This paper asks how much we might be misled by our economic assessment of climate change when we employ a conventional quadratic damages function and/or a thin-tailed probability distribution for extreme temperatures. The ...
متن کاملUncertainty Investigation of Precipitation and Temperature Scenarios for the Sira Basin under Climate Change Impact
Results of assessment of the future climate change impacts is associated with some uncertainties. Considering the range of uncertainties increases reliability of the results. In this study, climate change impacts on daily precipitation, maximum and minimum temperature of Sira basin are assessed using LARS-WG model, for 2036-65 period. Accordingly, uncertainty of new emissions scenarios (RCP2.6،...
متن کاملClimate Change Impact on Precipitation Extreme Events in Uncertainty Situation; Passing from Global Scale to Regional Scale
Global warming and then climate change are important topics studied by researchers throughout the world in the recent decades. In these studies, climatic parameters changes are investigated. Considering large-scaled output of AOGCMs and low precision in computational cells, uncertainty analysis is one of the principles in doing hydrological studies. For this reason, it is tried that investigati...
